Rickie Lee Jones Ticket and Album Giveaway

Rickie Lee Jones

“This is not one to be missed, kissed with the promise that beauty and depth in songs still matters.” –Filter magazine on Jones’ latest album, Balm In Gilead

The legend, Rickie Lee Jones, will be in Madison on Tuesday, February 23rd for what is sure to be an intimate, thoughtful, and inspiring show at The Barrymore.  She is truly a soulful force to be reckoned with.  More than 30 years into her musical career, she is still writing songs that leave listeners frozen in awe of her raw talent.

We are proud to present Rickie Lee Jones’ upcoming show, and the night will be all the more meaningful with a packed house of appreciative fans–a.k.a. YOU.  If you’re jonesin’ (sorry, couldn’t resist) to see the show, but are a little low on cash, we’d love for you to enter to win a pair of tickets, as well as her new album, Balm In Gilead.  Read on to find out how to enter, and find out a bit more about this extraordinary performer.

BIO:

“Once touted as the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones proved no less idiosyncratic or mercurial; like Mitchell, Jones experienced significant commercial success at the outset of her career, but a restless creative spirit — combined with a stubborn refusal to fit comfortably into any one musical niche — sealed her ultimate destiny as that of a highly regarded cult heroine.

Jones was born on November 8, 1954, in Chicago, but the volatile relationship between her mother and father resulted in an upbringing that led her everywhere from Phoenix, AZ, to Olympia, WA, where an expulsion ended her school career. As a teen, Jones began drinking heavily, and eventually she left home and began drifting up and down the West Coast before settling in Los Angeles in the mid-’70s. There she worked a series of waitressing jobs while occasionally performing in area clubs, where she sang and honed her unique, Beat-influenced spoken word monologues. She also began a relationship with fellow boho Tom Waits…” Read the full biography over at Allmusic.com

  1. I encourage all fans of really good music to pick up a copy of Balm In Gilead. On top of RLJ’s great songwriting and beautiful, jazzy, smoky vocals, she collaborates with Ben Harper, Alison Krauss, Victoria Williams, and the dearly-departed Vic Chesnutt. It’s a beautiful album, simply brilliant.

The concert promises to be a real treat. An evening with Rickie Lee Jones — Jeffrey Gaines is no longer on the bill — 2 hours of stellar entertainment, songs new and old, a night up close and personal with a musical legend.

Good luck to those entering the contest!

  2. Wow, this is a REALLY hard question because there are so many great “wild girls” out there, but for me it’s got to be our 22 month-old daughter. Why? Well . . . 22 months is pretty wild. Every step (running or walking,) every word (signing or babbling,) every emotion (laughing or crying,) is an education and a joy. She is our “wild” – the unrestrained, animal off-spring that still sits deep-down inside all of us. As an adult, it’s music that let’s it out. So, I guess, fatherhood so far is a like a rock concert every day.

I’d be thrilled to see RLJ in concert again (last saw her in 1990) or just to get a copy of the new album. I love her commitment and her voice.

  3. That would have to be our daughter Lin, who is in the Marines. She’s always followed her own path, sometimes completely in the dark, but always her own way. Fierce when she has to be, and always loving to those close to her, she’s an amazing, wild girl.

  4. Rickie is singing about Courtney Love. Both girls spawned their musical careers in Olympia, WA where “the only game in town” was the music underground.

  5. my fave “wild girlzzz” are my fellow WigGig chicks Julie, Lori Laura and Lulu. it could be a holiday, birthday or we could be just out pushing blinky toothbrushes for Dr. Chris ….we are out to paint “my city” WILD&CRAZY!!! Be on the lookout for those red, blue, teal and white wigs all around Madison…..you never know where we might show up:-) Pick the “Scarem HAIRem” for those WILD Rickie Lee Jones tickets!!!

  6. Long time fan since day one but have never had the pleasure ! Would be a thrill but either way I’ll always be listening to Rickie Lee and lovin’ the vibe. Rock on !

  7. Wow! So many to choose…I’d definitely have to say my sister who rocked her way through her 20′s in the Madison music clubs slinging drinks and literally supporting some great bands with gigs, parties and good friends. Totally paved the way for her new career as a working mom and psych. nurse.

On the internationally famous side I’d have to say it’s a toss up between Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse for their ability to parlay their wild side to legendary proportions whether they were/are ever able to harness it or not.

I can literally think of hundreds, but those came to mind first when I thought of music and wild girl.

Rickie Lee Jones was an acquired taste for me, but I’ve always loved her wild style and she did grow on me the more I got into her lesser known stuff. Been wondering how I could go to that show. This would be awesome!

  8. At present, my very favorite wild girl is melaniejane.
It is just wild to me how we can be having a calm
conversation one minute, and she steps on stage and turns into a freight train full of bucking stallions in a thunderstorm the next. Regardless of wether she is doing a solo show with her heart wrenching cello or joining in with pat (macdonald) or many other Steel Bridge Songfest artists, it’s going to get wild if mj is jamming with them.
And it never fails. An exceptional musician of the wild wild west.

  9. i gotta go with my daughter Anna, who’ll be 24 next month. she’s an accountant after getting a masters degree last spring. she spent a semester in australia, and has been all over the usa as well as 5 or 6 countries in europe.

  10. It is very hard to pick a favorite “wild girl”.
I have nine sisters. A couple of them wild girls.
When we all get together it is loud, crazy and it can be a wild time. Singing, laughing, dancing,…
When you know someone from my family you know of the Reinke sisters. 9 strong beautiful souls .
I may have to say my Mother, who had 12 children.
She worked and raised us all to be independent strong individuals.
Most of my close friends have been strong independent wild girls.

  11. My wildgirl is Raina-Boo
    Raina means “queen” but
she needs no king to guide her
Bounces off walls, runs through the halls

    learned already how to say
    dont go away mad,…
    Just GO AWAY

    My wildgirl is Raina-Boo
Just four years old,.. she’s got her ‘tude
I love her cuz she’s empowered,. not rude
Dude, Hook me up with the tix,
you can leave em at the gate
to get my seat third row, right center
    I wont be late

check this wild video and see the wild-girl

    Thanks and take care
    Bry

  12. My favorite “wild girl” musician of the moment is Thao of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. In her latest album she incorporates heartbreak, sadness, joy, friendship, and hope into a rolicking good time/danceable CD. Not many can do this and yet, she pulls it off in spades.

How “wild” is this? In what is a very white male centric industry, this asian chick is making fantastic/relevant music and making people laugh, dance, think, and sing in the process… Thao reminds us of what up and coming “wild girls” are capable of… everything and anything they put their minds to.

  13. I’d definitely go with my 5 year old niece. She’s pretty wild now. I can only imagine what will come when she turns 21!

  14. SO many amazing wild girls out there! Thanks for sharing, everyone! This, like so many of our ticket contests, was pretty difficult to pick winners from. Buuut, it had to be done, so here we go:

Congrats to Carol, our grand prize winner, and Jeffrey, our runner up. Check our e-mail inboxes!

As always, thanks so much for your thoughtful responses.
    Stay wild, everyone.
