It’s been a long time coming, but the brand new Union South is finally ready for its Grand Opening! What better way to celebrate the event than with Of Montreal, a carnival-esque band whose music Rolling Stone calls, “a soulful romp through psychedelic melodies and sprawling noise-scapes”?

IT would have to be my first concert. I saw “Lynyrd Skynyrd” at the Brown County Fair when I was 13. All I remember thinking is, “this is soooo much better than the CD”. I’ve been hooked ever since.
It was the first time I met my fiancé. I was 19 and home from school for the weekend. I was at my younger brother’s soccer tournament and it started to rain. I went to my car to grab my umbrella. As I stood covered I noticed that she was standing in the rain without a jacket or an umbrella. I walked over and asked her if she would like to share my umbrella. There was an instant connection and we ended up going out the next evening. Fast forward 9 years and now I get to experience that feeling everyday I wake up and turnover to see her beautiful face.
It was definitely the first time I went on tour with a band. I had played shows here and there, but never really out of town. A couple of Octobers ago we embarked on an 11 day tour of the midwest. After the first 500 miles I was sick of traveling. Somewhere between 1000 and 1500 I just stopped noticing as the car became my home. After the fourth or fifth day I had no clue where I was or where I would be going. At nights we’d play shows and meet all kinds of cool new people. Try and find a place to sleep at someones house and get up and drive, drive, drive. It was definitely the most free I’ve ever felt, and I’ve yearned to get back on the road every day since. Thankfully this summer we’ll be touring Europe. I hope it never ends.
First time I heard the Boo Radleys I thought my speakers were blown. It was their Lazarus CDsingle. Been hooked on shoegaze (and The Boos!) ever since. Still searching for more music by them and their new projects.
My first kiss. It was outside of a bowling ally or something in Monticello, WI. She was German…I was young. My 1983 Toyota Celica saw everything while she used WAY too much tongue. That was a pretty good day.
I’d say the first time I saw Neil Young & Crazy Horse. It was in Hershey, PA around 1996. The Horde Tour had all these young rockers like Lenny Kravitz and Blues Traveller that were great. However, Neil Young came out and showed them how to rock as if it was the last show of his life. He performed a solo set and then with Crazy Horse that gives me chills just thinking about it. Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!
The first time I finished a long race; it was a half-marathon. I saw the finish line, and just felt this huge jolt of adrenaline burst through me! After I crossed the line, I was so excited and so pumped that I couldn’t stop laughing and jumping around! It was the day after my last final of a spring semester, so that finish line tasted like pure, sweet, well-earned freedom. I’ll never forget it!
It never gets old reading the thoughtful, unique responses to these contests. Thanks everyone! The tix for this one will go to Austin. Congrats!
