It’s no secret that folk kingpin Woody Guthrie is a songwriter that Billy Bragg holds quite dear to his heart. Most fans have already heard his moving interpretations of Woody’s words through his collaboration with Wilco on the Mermaid Avenue albums, and we can’t wait to hear the songs performed live. Billy will be in Madison for Woody’s posthumous 1ooth birthday celebration at the Barrymore on Tuesday, July 10 and we want to see you there!
Read on to find out how you could win a pair of tickets to the show as well as a copy of Mermaid Avenue: Deluxe Edition, courtesy of the always awesome folks at MadCity Music Exchange.

I think Johnny Cash deserves a good birthday tribute. And I think I’d pick Bob Dylan to perform it. Though they have their differences, I’d be hard pressed to find many people that could sing with the kind of authenticity that Cash always did.
Hello! Great question. I would say that Pete Seeger would be deserving of a big birthday tribute! The decades-long journey of the social justice singer-songwriter paved the way for many passionate political performers who followed in his footsteps, fighting for civil rights, fighting against war and fighting to protect the environment…encompassing many social justice issues. I think Steve Earle would fit the bill…he can be gritty and raucous and political but can also capture your attention with sweet, poetic folk songs.
Thanks for bringing Billy Bragg here!
The recently passed Levon Helms is certainly deserving of a birthday tribute. From his time with The Band, to his latest solo work, Levon has helped shape the face of Americana music. I would love to see Collin Meloy
Shoot, wasn’t done…
The recently passed Levon Helms is certainly deserving of a birthday tribute. From his time with The Band, to his latest solo work, Levon has helped shape the face of Americana music. I would love to see Collin Meloy perform the tribute. As evidenced by his work with The Decemberists, he understands folk/Americana music, and his unique voice would add a fresh twist to Levon’s works.
You’re going to the show, Heather! Congratulations.
Thanks so much!!! I can’t wait!
