Impress Your Friends Without Putting Them To Sleep: Youth Lagoon In Madison TONIGHT (7.7.12)

If you’re as hungover as I am after celebrating the Fourth of July, then you need to chill your ass out. Summer is all about fun but it isn’t supposed to be a constant party, so let’s get it together, okay? Face it, after all of the midweek festivities, you need something low-key to do this weekend. Well, party animal, you’re in luck. Youth Lagoon is coming to the High Noon Saloon tonight (7.7.12) with his addictive, calming summer melodies.

2012 has been a curious year for music because the entire scene has been overdosing on reverb. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great device, but sometimes I’d like to actually hear some nuances in my music. The Year of Hibernation is the first album by Trevor Powers, 22, under the name Youth Lagoon and it has certainly gotten him noticed. While there’s no shortage of that trendy lo-fi, chillwave feel, it’s also packed with gorgeous, sunny melodies that drive each track and keep you listening intently. While his tone is hushed, the music begs to be played loud. Youth Lagoon takes that soft, fuzzy sound that we’ve been so surrounded by this year and injects new life into it with his keyboard.

The fuzzy guitar riffs and drum machine beats mixed with loads of synth make for a nostalgic sound that everyone is trying to make happen right now, but there’s something that sets Youth Lagoon apart from all those could-be bands. Instead of getting lost in a blur of muffled noise, his melodies take center stage with a bright and uplifting sound, making it the perfect soundtrack to your summer road trip or barbeque that you’re probably getting wasted at. There’s a kind of innocence to The Year Of Hibernation. It doesn’t sound like he has set out to outdo any of his peers in the industry. Trevor Powers is just doing what he does and happens to be doing it better than anyone else.  Essentially, it’s the kind of music that you can impress your friends with without putting them to sleep.
