  1. My imaginary city lies at the bottom of a valley with mountains to the east and west. There is a natural spring that runs through the city so that everyone has clean drinking water. The cityfolk use this spring water for irrigation to the fresh vegetable gardens that are in every yard. Everyone plants two or three different types of fruits or vegetables and then they trade. The wealthier folks live on the outside of the city where their homes are built into the sides of the hills so as not to disrupt the natural landscape.

  2. Imagine a city — Madison, perhaps — with fully separate bike lanes with controlled lights and where bicyclists follow all traffic laws. Most streets have only two lanes for cars because the second lane on each side is a dedicated bus lane. There is an elevated train that connects all parts of the city, as well as the outlying suburbs, so that there is no need to drive because one can get anywhere by bicycle or bus or train, and the stigma associated with choosing to live without a car disappears.

  3. My imaginary city lies nestled between the ocean and the mountains, so recreational opportunities abound. Biking would be the main mode of transportation, because the infrastructure would be created with bikes in mind first, cars second. A light rail system would aid in getting citizens from place to place over long distances.

  4. Congrats, Roscoe! The tix are yours.
