If American independence isn’t enough reason to celebrate on this beautiful Friday, with a long weekend allowing time to relax, we’ve got a number of shows spotlighting rising talent to mark on your calendar in the coming months.
Sunday, July 27, Brooklyn pop-rockers The XYZ Affair play at the High Noon Saloon. The band, whose members met while attending New York University, are gaining a following for their catchy melodies that draw comparisons to their friends and colleagues Jukebox the Ghost, or even The Rocket Summer. To learn more about the band’s history — and who lead singer Alex Feder feels would win in a fight between an elephant and two bears — check out the following interview from earlier in the month.
Eef Barzelay, of Clem Snide fame, will also be rolling into Madison this summer on the heels of the release of Lose Big, an album that has been grabbing attention from music critics across the nation. The album has been recently featured in the Washington Post and featured as NPR’s Song of the Day. Barzelay, who was born in Tel Aviv, plays Thursday, August 6, at wine bar Cafe Montmartre — I would recommend pairing this show with a brisk malbec.
Singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim last rocked Madison in May, but returns to the Orpheum Stage Door with Centro-Matic on Friday, September 12. Check out this interview with the Brooklyn performer to learn more about his sophomore release and outlook on music.
Finally, Chicagoland native and Bonnaroo darling Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet (featuring renowned master of mandarin Bela Fleck) will play the Barrymore Theatre for a very special show on Tuesday, September 16, midway through a busy fall touring season. The 28-year-old appears to be living the “American dream” with critics and fans alike falling in love with her folky sound. Learn more about Washburn in this interview with The Sequitur and check the band out in a recent studio performance for KPBS.
