Alex DeGroot of Wisconsin-based indie dream goth outfit Zola Jesus spent much of 2011 tripping all over the globe playing with a variety of exceptional bands while turning fans on to the brilliance of their own tunes.
De Groot was kind enough to take the time to tell us about five of his personal favorite bands with whom he shared a stage in 2011. Check out his list after the jump.
We love seeing local talent explode on the national and international music scene, and get the recognition that they deserve. Zola Jesus has been touted as nothing short of an indie-goth queen by critics over the last year or so, and the release of her new album, Conatus, on October 4 will do nothing to knock her from her throne.
Take a listen to the new tunes in their entirety over at NPR and let us know what you think!
Prior to her Madison homecoming performance at the High Noon Saloon last week, Zola Jesus stopped by Blast House Studios to cut this emotionally stirring version of “Night” for our Soundcheck Sessions. Thanks to the talents of videographer Ryan Heraly, we can all experience the hauntingly beautiful sights and sounds from the studio in this video:
You can find more exclusive video performances of touring bands playing their fave stuff in greenrooms, during Soundcheck, at radio stations, and wherever else they feel like hanging out before a show on our Soundcheck Sessions page.
Zola Jesus’ wave of recent success shows no signs of breaking anytime soon. The Wisconsin-grown gothic heroine has been featured in NME, Dazed and Confused, Nylon, Vogue Italia, Pitchfork, Spinner, The New York Times, the recently-deceased Paste magazine, and our own humble blog, among others. Pretty impressive, if you ask us.
The latest frenzy of activity surrounding the artist revolves around the just-released video for “Sea Talk” off her Valusia EP, due out next month. Absolutely gorgeous.
We see incredible things in this talented lady’s future. We couldn’t be more thrilled that local lo-fi psychedelic goth queen Zola Jesus is making big waves in the music world—like, really big. Her latest work, the Stridulum EP has received rave reviews from music critics all over the country (including Pitchfork, and Nylon magazine), and now, as she prepares for a UK tour later this summer, she stands poised to win over an army of fans across the pond as well.
With your help, she may just be able to grab some airtime on (legendary BBC radio personality) Steve Lamaq’s show. Want to help make it happen? Click here and submit your vote for her latest single, “Night,” to make it onto Lamaq’s Rebel Playlist. Hurry—-voting is only open through Sunday!
