  5. While in Madison for the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association State Tournament back in 1989 I wandered into B-Side Records and found a cassette recommended by a friend: Trip Shakespeare’s _Are You Shakesperienced?_. Didn’t dig it at first, but shortly after saw Trip live, and my life was changed. Other amazing B-Side purchases: my first-ever Velvet Underground album (s/t); all the Tar Babies I could find; Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians; Hoodoo Gurus; Drive-By Truckers. I won’t be going to Madison for the WHSFA tournament for the first time in ages this year (I’m now a coach) and am bummed to miss Record Store Day!

  6. I remember being extremely excited to find the first solo album from former Procol Harum organist Matthew Fisher at Mad City years ago in the dollar bin. I was so wowed I tried to make some conversation with the clerk (maybe Dave Zero) about it, and he totally thought (rightfully) I was nuts. The album was named “Journey’s End” and I said something like “I’ve been looking for this for a while – do you know who Fisher is?” and he looked at it and said – “Uh, Journey’s Matthew Fisher?” Completely embarrasing memory now.

  7. Thanks for your responses guys! These are great stories. The contest is now closed, but we’d love to hear more of your favorite record store experiences. Post away! Winners will be notified via e-mail.
