Artists You Should Know: Sly & Robbie (+ Ticket Giveaway)

Sly and Robbie

It has been said that the musical partnership of Kingston natives Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare “re-etched the very landscape of not just Jamaican music, but the entire world’s.”  That’s a heavy claim to make, but it’s certainly no overstatement.  It’s estimated that they have played or produced over 200,000 tracks!  We’re so fortunate to have this touring pair make a stop in Madison on June 10th.  Read on to find out more about their impressive ongoing legacy and find out how you can win a pair of tickets to the show!

Sly and Robbie’s musical union took place in the mid ’70s, after both members had already established their names on the Jamaican reggae scene.  (Sly had been drumming for Skin, Flesh and Bones and Robbie played bass for The Aggrovators.)

The pair’s production work introduced several new styles to the genre including the “rockers” beat and the “rub-a-dub” sound.  Not only did the sound of reggae change as a result of their work, but the methods in which musicians created it was influenced as well.  Sly and Robbie were among the first to utilize computer-assisted music in their work–a trend that has endured since the ’80s.

Having worked with major reggae names such as Bunny Wailer, Culture, Gregory Isaacs, and Jimmy Cliff, Sly and Robbie’s rhythm skills soon became a hot commodity in the  music world at-large.  Their artistic collaboration and production can be hard on tracks from artists as varied as Grace Jones, Mick Jagger, Serge Gainsbourg, Bob Dylan and Britney Spears!

More than 30 years since the pair joined forces, Sly and Robbie are still creating music, touring, and performing with the energy, creativity, and passion of artists half their age.
