Artists You Should Know (plus ticket giveaway!): Meat Puppets

Meat Puppets

One of the most influential acts of the grunge era is heading to Madison!  An inspiration to major players such as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Dinosaur Jr., Arizona’s Meat Puppets have a legacy that most bands can only dream of.  They’re set to rock our humble Midwestern city this Friday (May 29th) at the Annex, and you NEED to be there!  Don’t have your tickets yet?  We’re here to help!  Read on to find out how you could win a pair of spots on the True Endeavors guest list and witness the band’s unforgettable marriage of alterna-punk, acid psychedelia and thrash.

Formed in 1980 by Derrick Bostrom and brothers Cris and Curt Kirkwood, the Meat Puppets’ original sound was heavily-rooted in the world of hardcore punk and grew to include genres like country and psychedelic rock, becoming major players in the newly dubbed “cowpunk” subgenre.

After several successful releases on the famous SST label, The ‘Puppets public exposure reached a high point in 1993, when they performed alongside Nirvana during their haunting MTV Unplugged showcase.

Over the years, The Meat Puppets endured lineup changes, multiple breakups, drug abuse, jail time and personal tragedy.   After reforming most recently in 2006, the Kirkwood brothers and new drummer Ted Marcus went on to release Rise To Your Knees the following year.  Released only weeks ago, their newest album, Sewn Together, is already being hailed as one of the band’s best works.

Win a Pair of Tix!: Nirvana covered 3 Meat Puppets songs for their MTV Unplugged performance.  If you’re the first blog reader to post what those three songs were, you and a friend will be heading to the band’s show on us!
