New Pornographers

Just like the title says, if you’re hoping for the chance to see some of indie rock’s finest pop masters live in concert for free, then you’ve come to the right place!

We’re thrilled to welcome The New Pornographers back to Madison for their show at The Orpheum (tickets still available for purchase here) this Wednesday, August 4th.  Their latest release, Together, has been called “another masterstroke,” “explosive and infectious yet tight and glossy,” and sure to “satisfy orchestral-rock geeks and hook-heads” by the music press.  Yup, it sure is hard not to love these guys…

Enter to win a pair of tix after the jump.

  1. Mary Timony needs to make a comeback. Helium was great, (Beavis & Butt-Head made fun of their videos), but her solo albums just alright. She hasn’t released an album in three years.

  2. Solex is one of the most underrated and overlooked artists I can think of. Elisabeth Esselink, who goes by Solex, put out three amazing records on Matador and then released her last one herself and yet no one seems to know her. If anything else I’m hoping for a “comeback” just so her LP’s will get re-issued as they are not easy to find. She just put out a new record with Cristina Martinez + Jon Spencer so I’m hopeful.

  3. When I was a sophomore in high school I got really excited about Giant Drag and made a trip down with my dad to see them play with Pretty Girls Make Graves at the Metro. I would love to see Annie Hardy make a great new album that got attention.

  4. Wham! – definitely needs to make a comeback. Not necessarily for their musical stylings (which are formidable if I do say so myself); but more so for the comedic value. Potentially a tour with Culture Club. Maybe even another Christmas album…? (I think my head would explode from the awesomeness)

  5. I’ve been listening to Neutral Milk Hotel a lot lately. I know that Jeff Magnum released a solo album and has performed some Neutral Milk Hotel stuff. “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea” was ahead of it’s time and Neutral Milk Hotel could be HUGE now.

  6. Definitely Beulah. One of my favorite bands but criminally underrated. The Miles Kurosky solo act is great and all but I want the real deal.

  7. I wish the Kinks would get back together before either of the Davies brothers passes on…and a comeback of the original Napalm Death would be pretty interesting…and the Archers of Loaf really should get back together…ooh, and Rocket from the Crypt! yeah, that’d be awesome as well….

  8. I hear Rival Schools got back together, but I’m waiting to see the proof (be it in an album or as a tour). Such a solid early-’00s album that rests along side the best Jimmy Eat World and The Promise Ring have to offer.

Beyond that The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan would be awesome as far as reunited comebacks are concerned.

  9. Kris Delmhorst for a serious breakout and some recognition as talented singer/song writer. Way under rated and such a talent. Her CD from 2009, “Shotgun Singer” is such a beautiful collection of songs with stunning production… all done on a shoe-string of a budget. She’s great live and comes across as just an every-day normal person.

  10. I don’t know if I’d call a return of Neutral Milk Hotel as a break out of obscurity so much, but that would be one hell of a miraculous and welcome comeback. The video of Mangum’s solo performance of a few NMH songs a few months back gives me some hope that some sort of a comeback might just have a sliver of a chance.

  11. File this under “Wishful Thoughts in a Frozen-Over Hell” but I think an Uncle Tupelo reunion would be fantastic. And I’m not hoping for a re-hash of old Uncle Tupelo sound/sentiment. A new album would be a must. Tweedy and Farrar, two creative and poetic American songwriters reuniting armed with life experience, clear and confident voices, and residue from a sour taste left in each other’s mouths since the breakup. This event could be a train wreck, but it would most definitely be a beautiful and insightful collision.

    • I have to admit, that would be frickin’ amazing and miraculous! I’d love to hear what they would create together again.

  12. The Avalanches have been gone for too long. Been waiting for their next album for years now.

  13. So many to chose from – too bad I can only form 140 character thoughts, damn you Twitter!…Marshall Crenshaw gets my vote for a comeback

  14. How about “Fat Boys”? They were awesome in the movie “Disorderlies,” plus check these out these funky lyrics from one of there jams (All You Can Eat):

“$3.99 for all you can eat?
Well, I’m a stuff my face to a funki beat!
We’re gonna walk inside, and guess what’s up:
Put some food in my plate, and some Coke in my cup
Give me some chicken, franks, and fries
And you can pass me a lettuce. I’m a pass it by
So keep shoveling, (Ha!) onto my plate
Give me some sweets and lots of cake.”

Come on people – thats got certified platinum written all over it.

(Or, once again, who wouldn’t want to see a Wham! reunion? Nice one Kate!)

  15. Only ever got to see Luna once at the High Noon and I will forever be thankful for that one chance. I often have a dream this band would re-form and make it big beyond just the so called indie greatness they achieved. I thought it was pretty much OK that in the film documentary that came out of this bands last year? on tour the part where they arrived in Madison they were somewhat annoyed it appeared. It was a great show anyways I thought.

    • It’s not a full Luna reunion of course, but have you heard about Dean & Britta’s work on the Andy Warhol screen tests?

      • Thanks Shelley. Just watched the video of ultra cool man Lou drinking the coke. Sure savors that drink and makes it look yummy. It’s kind of fascinationg to see him gulp then watch his throat twitch while swalling it. Can’t say anyone else could ever pull that one off. Perfect mix by Dean & Britta in the background covering a great VU tune.

  16. Deyarmond Edison. Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and the boys from Megafaun. They made some amazing music. Maybe ever a tour – Bon Iver, Megafaun, and Deyarmond?

  18. I think the Walkmen are a really under appreciated band.

They should be much bigger then they are. Hopefully their next album this fall will get the word out, and check them out at the Barrymore in Oct.

  19. Yet again, I’m left with the not-so-enviable job of picking a winner out of all these great entries. DAYUM, you guys…

OK, the winner for this one is Katie H. for bringing back the “jitterbug” boys.

Thanks everyone! Hope to see you all at the show tomorrow. This is going to be a fantastic night!

  20. Would like to see Bondo Do Role get back together. They were a breakout brazilian band that the most awesome party music mixing all kinds of crazy genres. Definitely would kick out the jams at any party.

They had some strife, held a reality show to pick a new singer and then poof, gone. Would love to have seen what they could have done on some other albums.
