Madison Concert Ticket Giveaway: Das Racist

Das Racist

“They’re deceptively laid-back satirists who deliver their smackdowns amid da-da streams of consciousness, sometimes with such subtlety that by the time the joke finally registers they’re off on a fresh, equally strange and frequently hilarious tangent.” —Chicago Tribune

If you like your hip hop flavored with a couple shakes of ridiculousness, look no further than the goofballs of Das Racist.  The trio will be rolling in to Madison’s High Noon Saloon on Wednesday, October 19 (tickets here), and we want you to get to experience their shenanigans in person.

DAS RACIST with special guests DANNY BROWN • DESPOT • BBU

High Noon Saloon – 8:30pm – $12 ADV $14 DOS – 18+

With an origin going back to their time spent living in a “Students of Color for Social Justice”-themed dorm, Das Racist’s meeting seems like destiny. While MCs Victor Vazquez and Himanshu Suri met years earlier, 2008 would be the year that they would come to the attention of the music world after their strangely catchy song “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” became a YouTube hit.

Teamed up with their hype man, Dap (aka Ashok Kondabolu), the Brooklyn group has a style that both satirizes and reveres hip-hop, combining druggy nonsense, social commentary, and obscure pop culture references into one boldly self-aware package. In 2010, the group self-released two mixtapes, Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man, with the latter issued in association with the Mad Decent label and featuring a song with production by tastemaker and label head Diplo. Soon after, Das Racist announced they would release their debut full-length, Relax, on Greedhead Music, a label imprint run by Himanshu Suri. Relax arrived in September of 2011.

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS:   When the band isn’t leading fans to the “combination Pizza Hit and Taco Bell,” they’re rapping about the wonders of White Castle, so we have to ask:  If you were in a band, what local eatery would you want to sing the praises of?  Let us know in the comments section below.

Please have your comments posted by 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.  A winner will be chosen and notified shortly thereafter.

  1. Gotta let the world know about the Melting pot burger at Dotty Dumplings Dowry!!

  2. Francisco’s. Nothing like washing down a giant burrito with a margarita that is even bigger.

  3. Madison has an abundance of great restaurants. From large operations like the Great Dane, to smaller ones like Alchemy, or in between like Jamerica. Just about any eatery on or off State St. Amy’s Cafe, Casa Bianca, Buraka, or Kabul. (Haven’t been down there in a while, so I’m not sure if they are still there.) If they really want mexican, Laredo’s all the way. Unless they want it on the cheap and inauthentic, then Qdoba/Chipotle. Was I supposed to pick just one?

  4. I would have to go with Parthenon’s Gyros on state street. Besides from being incredibly delicious, it would be fun making rhymes with falafel and gyro. Maybe it could start like “Mmmm take a look at this gyro, hold up for a second and let me stuff my piehole, man… I can’t stop eating this falafel, I wonder what it would taste like on top of a fa waffle… Did I just say fa waffle, ah screw it, just let me nosh dude!!!!”

  5. Mickey’s on Willie St. would certainly be song worthy. There’s nothing better than enjoying their “World’s Greatest Sandwich” with some Sexy Fries out in the back patio.

  6. Culver’s. Keeping fast food classy since 1984.

  7. I’m at that A and W.
    I’m at that A and W.
I’m at that combination A and W and Long John Silver’s!

(out in Verona, it went under years ago, HOW!?)

  8. You got ’em AJ. Congrats!
