Tonight’s Madison Concerts (4.17.10): Ellis Paul and Ghetto Division

Ellis Paul

My friend Les is a devoted Ellis Paul fan, something we share in common.  I asked him why he’s so into Ellis, and this is what he said:

“In 1995, after years of coaxing, I finally decided to attend a singer-songwriter performance at the Cafe Carpe in Ft. Atkinson, WI. The featured performer was a gentleman by the name of Ellis Paul. I had been stuck in the 60’s and 70’s genre and was not expecting much. Call me a skeptic. I proceeded to a small room and found a comfortable seat. When Ellis took the stage with his guitar and harmonica, I thought, ‘Bob Dylan wannabe.’ From the first moment he strummed the opening and the words came out in song, I has hooked. He opened up a whole new world of new music to me….the world of singer-songwriters. Those who play the coffee shops and small venues. Who travel the country in their cars to make the next show. They record on small record labels and rarely do you hear them on the radio. Ellis will always be my favorite. He may not be the best singer, the best guitar player or the best song writer, but when you put them all together, he is simply the best.”
