TALLEST MAN ON EARTH

Psst!  That’s not his real name…and he’s not even all that tall, but “Tallest Man On Earth” sure looks great on a concert poster!  Musicians love to get creative with their stage names, and there are a TON of great ones out there.  How many can you think of? Post your list in the comments and we’ll pick one lucky contestant to be added to the guest list for the show!

Matsson’s melodies are remarkably pliant, and while it’s understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Grave, the more you’ll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Grave transcends comparison– which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype– and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting.

Good Old War

There’s a line in Good Old War’s ‘We’ve Come A Long Way” that goes “I thought I’d learn to behave, but I don’t feel I’m acting my age.”  Is that supposed to be a bad thing?!  For those of you who refuse to grow up, let us know how you manage to stay young at heart.  Your response might just land you and a friend a spot on the guest list for the show!

Monday Ticket Giveway: Clem Snide and Cloud Cult

OK, blog readers, let’s get to it!  We’re giving away tix to two fantastic upcoming indie shows this week.

_________________

First up is Clem Snide. Eef Barzelay’s indie rock/alt–country outfit is slotted to play the High Noon Saloon this Thursday with Plants and Animals and The Heligoats.  Clem Snide takes its name from a recurring character in William S. Burroughs’ novels, but it’s certainly not the only tie-in to literature that music has seen.  Give us your list of band names, songs, lyrics, or albums that have been inspired by the literary world. See how many references you can find, and you might just win a  pair of tickets to Clem Snide’s show!

If you’ve had your eye on Friday’s Cloud Cult show instead, you’re in luck!  We’re offering an exclusive giveaway for that show right here on the True Endeavors blog.  The Minneapolis-based indie rockers don’t just make great music–they’re also raising awareness on a number of environmental issues.  (Read more about Cloud Cult’s commendable green crusade here.)  In honor of the band’s environmental awareness, we’d like you to tell us what you’ve been doing, or what you resolve to start doing, to make your existence a bit easier on Mother Earth. Your response may earn tickets for you and a guest to Cloud Cult’s show! (While you’re thinking green, you might want to check this out too.)

Monday Ticket Giveaway: Lucy Kaplansky

This Saturday, the massively talented folk singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky will be performing at the High Noon Saloon.  Whether you’re familiar with her ever-growing solo catalog, adore her work in Cry Cry Cry with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell, or are just discovering her for the first time, Lucy’s straight-from-the-heart tunes are sure to move you.

Lucy Kaplansky

In her song, “When I Get To The Border,” Lucy fantasizes about leaving her troubles behind her.  She sings, Monday morning, Monday morning /Closing in on me/I’m packing up and running away/To where nobody picks on me.”

With this sentiment in mind, pick at least 5 songs that you think everyone should include on a Monday morning playlist and tell us why they never fail to put you in a great mood. As is the Monday tradition here on the blog, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to a lucky reader who responds to our query!
