In reaction to American grunge’s saturation effect on the music climate in the early ’90s, a counter movement emerged in the UK that rejected the angst-filled slacker ideals of the flannel crowd.  Drawing inspiration from their nation’s rich history of great guitar-based rock and pop, British musicians provided the soundtrack to the massive cultural movement which would become collectively known as Britpop.

This year’s festival season is starting to take shape.  Pitchfork announced the first batch of confirmed acts for their July showcase, plus a brand new feature where ticket holders have the opportunity to pick the bands’ setlists.

Jack White and The KillsAlison Mosshart are so strangers to being members of fantastic musical duos, so it only seems natural that they would join forces to create a brand new band called The Dead Weather. Along with The Raconteurs‘ “other Jack” (Lawrence) and Queens of the Stone Age‘s Dean Fertita, White and Mosshart plan to release the band’s debut album in June. Musicians sure do love their weed!  Especially, Fabulous, who was recently busted with 500 lbs (!) of the green stuff.  At least the rapper is in good company–check out these other artists who couldn’t quite sneak their vices past the authorities.

Could the current economic crisis actually be beneficial to the music world?  OasisNoel Gallagher seems to think so.  “I hope the financial crisis gets a bit worse – at least we’ll get a few good albums out of it,” he joked.  Way to see the silver lining, Noel!  In other Oasis news, the band’s tour of China has been canceled.  In response to hearing about the band’s pro-Tibet affiliations, the Chinese government revoked the band’s touring license.
