“My Mix Tape” Vol. I

Here at True Endeavors we’re blessed to work with a talented cast of music lovers. From indie rock to hip-hop and metal, their musical preferences are as diverse as their skills. Since they contribute so much work to Madison’s music scene we thought it might be interesting to see what they listen to outside of the club.  Feel free to contribute your own faves!

We present you with Katie Jo, our 23 yr. old metal loving, guitar playing, PR Intern.. She listens to her mix while cleaning her kitchen and “putting on her face” in the morning. Hit it girl:

Mix tapes are the soundtracks of our lives. There are mixes for love-making and love-hating, mixes for full-on rages and nights home alone. Your mix reveals who you are and spreads the music of the artists you hold dear.

Don’t be shy… Show us your mix.

Ghost of Perdition- Opeth

The best non-metal metal you’ll ever find, and my favorite band in the world. Melodic Singing Paired with mighty growls metal is known for. (listen to Hope Leaves right after for more of a “flaccid” Opeth)

Dirty Business-Dresden Dolls

The best in piano paired singing. A middle finger to all doubters and conformists.

You Belong To Me- Jo Stafford

I close my eyes and place myself in the 50’s during this song. Dressed in a pillbox hat with patent leather shoes, dancing with my baby one more time before he gets sent out to the Korean War. This is my favorite version of the song, paired wonderfully with Jo’s smoky voice.

Pink Cigarette- Mr. Bungle

Mike Patton (lead singer) is a genius. All of his songs are beautifully orchestrated noise. No other person could make a masterpiece out of singing in a gas mask.

Vampire- Antsy Pants

Kimya Dawson is the indie female version of Mike Patton. Kimya was the female member of the Moldy Peaches but has a bunch of side solo projects that will tickle your senses.

Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve Its Possessor Against Attacks from He Who Is in the Water – Nile

If the title doesn’t make you want to play the song, I don’t know what will. More proof that real metal doesn’t take itself too serious, wanting to separate itself from the whiny “whoa is me” metal. Most of Nile’s lyrics are inspired by Ancient Egyptian mysticism, history, religion, art, and the writings of H.P. Lovecraft.

Julia- Beatles

What list would be without a Beatles song? This song is especially special to me because my mothers name is Julie, and it provides me great comfort. Best listened to on vinyl during a lazy summer afternoon.

100 Days, 100 Nights- Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

To only have Sharon’s voice.. Listening to this song makes my swagger of confidence increase tenfold.

Hot Women Keep Wisconsin Warm

hotelcafe

Friday November 7  9:00pm (doors at 8:00)

High Noon Saloon 18+ show

“One bus, one band and a bunch of friends on the road.”

Hotel Cafe Tour, named after the Los Angeles coffee shop they all first met, is built on the promise of “No cookie cutter corporate American Idols, just real music, written by real artists, surrounded by real friends, who actually have a story to tell.” Instead of a competition between the up-and-coming indie artists, they share the stage in this one memorable night.

Twenty-one bucks gets you a night of 5 talented women singer songwriters who vocalize the feel-good-anthem for all women of the world.

Rachel Yamagata’s mood altering whispers serenade you to feel her vulnerability.

Meiko goes where no woman ever willingly choses to go, “openly proclaiming the sweetest secrets of her own beautiful heartbreak” (last.fm).

Thao Nguyen showcases a pop sound with roots in blues and indie-folk.

Jaymay’s layered and emotionally balanced songs will surely play your heartstrings.

And last but not least British soul singer Alice Russell’s soulful voice is paired with self assurance and sass.

So come relax for the night, and let the women of the Hotel Cafe Tour sing your new favorite song.

In this case good music also equals a good cause..

While the artists of Hotel Cafe warm your soul you’ll be helping keep Wisconsin warm. One dollar of each ticket sold will go to the Keep Wisconsin Warm Fund, which is a local non-profit dedicated to keeping the heat and power on for thousands of families in crisis. There will also be a raffle at the venue where you could win a variety of shiny fabulous prizes.
